SARAJEVO, June 28 (Reuters) – Bosnia’s hydropower producer Hidroelektrane na Trebisnjici (HET) invited bids for the construction and financing of a 160 megawatt (MW) plant in southeastern Bosnia at an estimated cost of 200 million euros ($231.80 million).

The Dabar power plant on the Trebisnjica river accumulation will be part of a planned 250 MW hydropower complex, Gornji Horizonti, which is designed to also incorporate two smaller hydropower plants, Nevesinje and Bileca.

The Dabar will produce 251 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity a year.

According to the tender, potential partners should finance at least 85 percent of the project’s value, while the investment would be paid out in electricity or cash. The remainder of the amount will be financed by HET.

Potential partners have until July 20 to place their bids, HET said.

HET is a subsidiary of Bosnia’s second largest power utility Elektroprivreda RS, which operates two coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 600 MW and three big and several small hydropower plants with a total capacity of 617 MW.

Several Chinese companies have already expressed interest in taking part in the project.

Unlike its Balkan neighbours, which rely on imports to cover much of their energy needs, Bosnia is able to export power thanks partly to its hydropower capacity, which provides 40 percent of its electricity. The rest comes from coal-fired plants. ($1 = 0.8628 euros) (Reporting by Maja Zuvela Editing by Alexandra Hudson)
