A pair of hydropower plants along Albania’s Drin River will receive additional mechanical overhauls and dam safety improvements courtesy of more than US$13.8 million in funding from the World Bank.

The Drin cascade has a cumulative output capacity of 1,350 MW — representing about 70% of Albania’s total power supply — and includes the Fierza, Komani and Vau i Dejes facilities. The projects are owned by Albania’s state-run power corporation, KESH, and provide about $200 million in annual value.

The World Bank said its latest round of financing will pay for the rehabilitation of spillway gates and stoplogs at Fierza and Komani, with the latter also receiving electromechanical improvements.

“Safe and reliable operation of the plants on the Drin Cascade is not only a safety concern, but also a potential revenue management source for the government in the future,” the World Bank said in a statement. “The project aims at improving the safety of the dams and their performance and availability, extending their lifetime and increasing their compliance with environmental safeguards best practices.”

Previous World Bank funding has helped pay for monitoring systems, spillway capacity assessments and the preparation of an emergency action plan.
