LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), September 28 (SeeNews) – The 45 MW hydro power plant (HPP) Brezice, the fourth out of five HPPs on the lower part of the Sava river in Slovenia, was inaugurated on Wednesday, the government said.
“The construction of HPP Brezice is not only a good economic idea, but an important message that the goals of Slovenia’s energy policy can be achieved,” prime minister Miro Cerar said, according to a government press release.
Brezice, which will generate 161 GWh of electricity per year, is part of a chain of five hydroelectric power plants located on the last 50 km of the Sava river in Slovenia, Hidroelektrarne na spodnji Savi (HESS), the company implementing the project, said earlier on its website.
Construction works began in 2014.
HESS is a subsidiary of Slovenian state-owned power conglomerate Holding Slovenske Elektrarne.
The hydro power plants on the lower Sava are expected to increase the security of electricity supply in Slovenia, and in particular to boost the share of electricity from renewable sources.
