Balkan region has the largest remaining unexploited hydropower potential in Europe. Up to 30 per cent of rivers remain in near-natural or pristine states. The region has an estimated 80,000 GWh technical potential.
Hydropower is one of the main domestic sources of electricity generation in the region. Albania derives 98 per cent of its domestically produced electricity from hydropower, Bosnia and Herzegovina 41 per cent, Serbia 30 per cent and Montenegro 31 per cent.
With financial assistance from international organizations, development of 2000 new hydropower projects is planned in the region.
